Stash Storage Solutions

So what do you do with all the yarn you have in waiting?  Do you like to leave it out so you can drool over all those colours and maybe give a skein a squeeze as you pass?  Or is your wool in a place that it's best covered up?  Do you like baskets or plastics?

I've been surfing the web for some storage ideas for yarn and realised that the yarn storage question is a hot potato amongst bloggers and knittting sites so I've taken some ideas from the best to pass onto you.

First of all if you have a lot of yarn, how do you decide to store it so you remember where it is?  If you're like me, you might just put it all in a cupboard and when you want a particular ball use it as an excuse to take it all out and drool again.  But, people who are organised tell me that it's best to have a plan.  What are your options - to store by colour/weight/yarn type.  Colour sounds like a wonderful idea, a rainbow of wool everytime you walk into the room, but it isn't necessarily the most practical.  Yarn by type could be good idea if you have all different types of fibres and need to have them to hand easily.  Yarn by wieght is great if you're looking for yarn for a particluar project.  It could be the type of thing you need to try to get the best method for you.

So what are you going to store your stash in?  Dust and moths might be a factor for you, in which case you may want to store in a sealed box, possibly plastic and although this sometimes isn't the prettiest if it takes care of your wool, then it's very important.

Plastic boxes are easily available, this kind will keep your yarn safe and sound and you can see the colours through which is a bonus.  The Holding Company offer a good range, but to be honest, you can get these type of boxes all over

but I love the idea of this, which is shoe storage and completely clear.  These are £10 each, but if you buy six you get a discount at £43.  Not cheap but might be just what you need.

If you can leave your yarn out, here are some ideas to get you going.  Ikea offer shelving storage units that fit together so you can add to them as your stash gets bigger (your other half will love that).

What about this?  I love this idea.  Your yarn peering down at you while you're working on other boring things.  It will motivate you to hurry through so you can get knitting asap, this is also available from The Holding Company

But baskets are always a pretty way to store anything and are available all over the place, including antique shops and car boot sales which will get you a bargain.  Your yarn never needs to be disorganised again.

Here's one last link to some images of other knitaholics and their storage solutions, it's well worth a look.

Here's one last little tip to stop your wool rolling around the floor - and I expect everyone at the knit'n'natters to have one this week to keep the floor wool free!
